Purdue Military Program - The research team generates new knowledge about military and veteran families, and the results are published in several academic journals. We also collaborate with others to conduct research that illuminates the effects of military service and practical ways to highlight the resilience of military and veteran families.
The Familiereiser study is designed to understand how families negotiate and manage changing family roles before, during, and after deployment. First, the study looks at everyday communication patterns, roles and responsibilities. Second, the study examines the risk and resilience dynamics of households. . Finally, it follows the transformation and trajectory of roles and relationships over time.
Purdue Military Program
In this study for the Department of Defense, I led a team that assessed the well-being of young children in military families affected by repeated deployments. Potential consequences include increased anxiety, emotional distress, peer problems, behavioral problems and hyperactivity. We compared the rates of these concerns with those of civilian children. Finally, we uncovered new information about the ways in which deployment poses a significant risk to children.

Created the Excellence in Research on Military and Veteran Families Award to recognize excellence in research for military and veteran families. A panel of distinguished reviewers examines all research on military families published during the year to select recipients and honorees. The award honors journal articles that combine exceptional rigor with important insights about military and veteran families.
Realizing that modern military families transcend traditional stereotypes, the Navy asked them to help learn about the diversity of families currently serving. Using data obtained from focus groups, we examined the diversity as well as risk and resilience of service members and their families. We focused specifically on Navy and Marine Corps families. During the second part of the study, we examine the experiences of service members and their families in relation to a service member's wound, illness, or injury. Interviewed military service members, current service area coordinators and service providers to explore common and specific needs. We also assessed how well current service programs, both civil and military, met these needs.

School Aviation Programs Respond To Critical Shortage Of Pilots
Zero to Three, a non-profit organization that provides training to promote healthy early development, created Duty to Care (DTC). This training program caters to the needs of very young children affected by deployment. DTC educates child care, family support, health care and mental health professionals about the challenges facing military families. evaluated the effectiveness of the curriculum in meeting these needs. West Lafayette, Ind. - The university is one of the country's best providers of training programs for military officers. The Military Research Initiative at the Helm (PMRI), established in 2014, offers internship programs at no cost to active duty officers returning to active duty after graduation.
"This program is truly a win-win opportunity for the Army, our officer corps and the country," said Eric Dietz, director of PMRI and professor of computer and information technology at the Polytechnic Institute. "Educational excellence is a cornerstone of meeting our national security and defense needs."
Since 2014, more than 80 officers from all branches of the military have graduated from the program, which allows active duty officers to complete master's degrees in less than two years and PhDs in less than three years. The program focuses on science and technology, but some graduates have completed advanced degrees in liberal arts programs.

The Military Research Institute works with officers to identify a faculty mentor in their field of study who either currently conducts research at the Department of Defense, expects to conduct research in the future, or conducts research in areas such as hypersonics, cyber security. does , or energy security which has defense functions.

Battlemind to Home Summit Richard L. Rodbush is a collaboration between the VA Medical Center, the Indiana National Guard and the VA Center for Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships.
Each fall, the conference brings together a range of experts to inform and educate Indiana professionals about critical issues facing military-connected families in Indiana communities.
In 2010, the Center for Deployment Psychology (CDP), the Indiana National Guard (INNG), and the Indiana Family and Social Services Administration (FSSA) created the STAR Behavioral Health Provider (SBHP). The program trains civilian behavioral health professionals on military-specific issues. It also helps military and veteran families find SBHP providers through an online registry that it maintains and manages. An award-winning initiative, SBHP is now active in 24 states. The collaboration was the model for federal legislation that extended civilian behavioral health care to military and veteran families.

Joining Community Forces Indiana (JCFI) is a partnership between the Indiana National Guard and the national and state Departments of Veterans Affairs. An outgrowth of the national Joining Forces initiative, JCFI educates non-governmental organizations, state government departments, corporations, policy makers and local leaders and works to build and maintain strong working relationships in Indiana communities. Several task forces focus on state priorities for military and veteran families: homelessness, financial preparedness and suicide. Reaching Rural Veterans aims to strengthen resources and services for vulnerable military and veteran families. Launched in Indiana and Kentucky, the pilot was a collaboration between faith-based food pantries and veteran and military family service providers in rural areas. This initiative reduced food insecurity and helped communities increase support for the elderly. In 2021, staff implemented a second phase in Illinois and began a third phase in Indiana. The fourth phase is planned to start in 2022.
