The Navy's Point Mugu Sea Range has adopted a new atmospheric-based directed energy test system that can demonstrate the Navy's ability to measure and predict remote weather conditions, a critical factor in supporting weapons systems testing and development.
The Integrated Atmospheric Characterization System (IACS) is a land-based research instrument that measures complex weather features and conditions that can affect laser propagation, such as optical turbulence, transmittance, and water vapor levels. IACS uses two LIDAR [light detection and ranging] systems to help measure and characterize atmospheric conditions, determine threshold heights, and act as a "supermetrometer," providing finely resolved measurements of cloud base height and slope for test engineers and operators.

"IACS gives us the ability to characterize the atmosphere at sea level to a much greater extent than other instruments," says John Gurka, head of the Sea Range Operations division in the Air Warfare Center's weapons division. "This detailed characterization helps weapons developers and range instrument engineers better evaluate the effects of the atmosphere on the weapons and instruments they develop and test at the Point Mugu sea range."

In December 1988, the 146th Airlift Wing began moving from its home in Van Nuys to a new facility constructed on 204 acres of state land near the Point Mugu facility. Known as the Channel Islands Air National Guard Station, the annex was built at a cost of over $70 million and was fully activated in April 1990.
