mac 10 pistol

Mac 10 Pistol - For nearly 20 years from the mid-1970s to the mid-90s, the MAC-10 was everywhere. At least that's what you think if your only exposure to guns is action movies and TV shows from that era.

The compact MAC-10 first registered in the American collective imagination when John Wayne wielded one with deadly flair in the 1974 police thriller.

Michael Caine, James Keane, Pam Greer, Rutger Hore, Kurt Russell, Bill Murray, Chow Yun-fat, Michael Ironside, Bruce Willis, Lorenzo Lamas, Antonio Banderas, George Peppard, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Charles Bronson and yes, Chuck Norris. are Everyone was brandishing the MAC-10 in movies and on TV.

The MAC-10 was so prominent in American culture in its heyday that its maker touted it—or more accurately, the MAC-11 it follows—"the gun that made the '80s roar." But by the time the 80s actually got going, the MAC-10 family of guns had already fallen from grace in the commercial market.

The MAC-10's manufacturer, Military Arms Corporation, hoped to become a leader in the growing market for military and police machine guns. However, despite the gun's popularity among film producers, it never caught on among professional operators. Many forces and agencies tried the MAC-10, but quickly abandoned it due to some obvious performance problems.

The MAC-10, however, maintained its prominence in American pop culture well into the 1990s, although street gangs and drug cartels were its primary users by then. Finally, the gun broke through the silver screen.

American weapons designer Gordon B. Ingram began development of what would become the recoil-selective fire MAC-10 in the mid-1960s. Ingram worked on several prototypes, eventually settling on the 10th version of the weapon, which he named the Model 10.

The final model is an uncorrected, pistol-sized box gun. Depending on who you ask, the MAC-10 is technically a submachine gun, not a machine gun.

With a wire measuring only 267 mm long, the MAC-10 is easy to conceal and practical in close quarters combat, features that may be particularly attractive to special operators and law enforcement.

The grip is centered in the body of the gun to provide some balance. The pistol was originally available in two calibers - 45 ACP and 9x19 mm. A magazine of 30 or 32 rounds, depending on caliber, is inserted into the base of the grip. Later models and variants accepted .380 and even .22 ammunition.

The gun originally operated with an open breech system with a cocking handle on top of the upper receiver. The open breech design accommodated the seemingly awkward position of the cocking handle, making it impossible to add an optical rail to the weapon. Neither would an infamous lead spray like the MAC-10 benefit from optics.

Closed bolt models, with arms on the side, came later. The smooth barrel has the trademark grooves on the bottom near the receiver so the user can turn the suppressor.

MAC-10 is not without its beauty. Its simple yet robust design makes it reliable and durable. It can also do a lot.

. Both the .45 caliber and 9mm versions fire at a minimum cycle rate of 950 rounds per minute. By comparison, the M-16 and AK-47 have a cycle rate of around 800 rounds per minute.

Durability and a high rate of fire are admirable qualities of a firearm, but the weapon must also be functional and, hopefully, versatile. Must work in the field, preferably in multiple scenarios.

. It has an effective range of only 50 yards or so. In comparison, the M-16 has an effective range of less than 500 yards, 10 times that of the MAC-10.

Of course, the MAC-10 and the M-16 are different rifles for different purposes, but apart from being fully automatic, 50 yards is a pretty dangerous range. Both the Uzi and the MP5, for example, have an effective range of at least 100 yards.

Most accuracy problems were caused by the MAC-10's short barrel, which is only 146 mm long. But the gun also takes a lot of beating. A strong fast fire means overshot.

Designers tried to solve this by adding several features to help stabilize the weapon during firing - a silencer that could also function as a foregrip, a leather strap for gripping the front of the receiver. hook, and a wire stock extension.

The suppressor potentially makes the weapon more attractive to special operators by adding stability and reducing muzzle report.

In the video he usually talks about the MAC-10. "I never liked this stock," he says. "It's weak and doesn't provide much support."

Despite the potential accuracy problems of the MAC-10, there was still interest in the weapon among military and police forces. When Ingram's MAC-10 caught the attention of US military officials, he began looking for investors to mass-produce the weapon, which led to the formation of the Military Armaments Corporation.

The Military Armament Corporation's use of the acronym MAC with Ingram's "Model-10" designation for the pistol gave the MAC-10 its popular name.

, Jack Lowes writes that at one point the military even considered replacing the Cult .45 with the MAC-10 as its standard weapon. Eventually, the Army abandoned the MAC-10 and instead adopted the Bretta M-9 as the weapon of choice.

The military was not the only organization to port the MAC-10. Before the HK MP5 was adopted by the UK Special Projects Team, the MAC-10 was also considered.

"Initially the Ingram MAC-10 was used, but after shooting the MP5 during cross-training with the SAS's GSG9, the HK pistol was chosen," writes Leroy Thompson in The MP5 Submachine Gun.

"The authors using the MAC-10 and MP5 can confirm that there is no competition when it comes to surgical precision," added Thompson. “The MP5 was definitely the right choice for hostage rescue situations.

Bad performance reviews from some potential customers weren't necessarily the end of the world, but they weren't the only problem facing MAC either. The Arms Export Control Act of 1976 severely restricted the export of weapons that could be used for military purposes and included additional restrictions on the export of cylinders.

Military Armament Corporation ceased production of the MAC-10 in 1973, filed for bankruptcy in 1975, and transferred the rights to the MAC-10 to RPB Industries, Inc. of Georgia in 1976. Many companies continued to produce parts and variants of the MAC-10 design – perhaps most notably the semi-automatic Cobra version – but the gun still did not see widespread use in the military and police.

However, the same design elements that made the MAC-10 theoretically suitable for law enforcement and special forces—stealth, high rate of fire, close-up capability—also made it attractive to other constituencies.

In Lethal Passage: The Story of a Gun, Eric Larson explores the history of the MAC-10 and its many variants, such as the smaller caliber MAC-11 and the semi-automatic Cobra, in American culture. Larson carefully distinguishes between the different types.

Hollywood may not have tricked the world's military into using the MAC-10, but it has convinced a whole bunch of assassins to do so. The MAC-10 was used in many high-profile assassinations during the 80s and 90s.

Assassins used the MAC-10 in the infamous 1979 Dadeland murders in Miami, when they killed drug lord Jimenez Pence and another man in broad daylight at the Dadeland Mall in front of several witnesses.
