American weapons designer Gordon B. Ingram began development of what would become the recoil-selective fire MAC-10 in the mid-1960s. Ingram worked on several prototypes, eventually settling on the 10th version of the weapon, which he named the Model 10.
The final model is an uncorrected, pistol-sized box gun. Depending on who you ask, the MAC-10 is technically a submachine gun, not a machine gun.
With a wire measuring only 267 mm long, the MAC-10 is easy to conceal and practical in close quarters combat, features that may be particularly attractive to special operators and law enforcement.
The grip is centered in the body of the gun to provide some balance. The pistol was originally available in two calibers - 45 ACP and 9x19 mm. A magazine of 30 or 32 rounds, depending on caliber, is inserted into the base of the grip. Later models and variants accepted .380 and even .22 ammunition.

The gun originally operated with an open breech system with a cocking handle on top of the upper receiver. The open breech design accommodated the seemingly awkward position of the cocking handle, making it impossible to add an optical rail to the weapon. Neither would an infamous lead spray like the MAC-10 benefit from optics.
Closed bolt models, with arms on the side, came later. The smooth barrel has the trademark grooves on the bottom near the receiver so the user can turn the suppressor.
MAC-10 is not without its beauty. Its simple yet robust design makes it reliable and durable. It can also do a lot.

Bad performance reviews from some potential customers weren't necessarily the end of the world, but they weren't the only problem facing MAC either. The Arms Export Control Act of 1976 severely restricted the export of weapons that could be used for military purposes and included additional restrictions on the export of cylinders.
Military Armament Corporation ceased production of the MAC-10 in 1973, filed for bankruptcy in 1975, and transferred the rights to the MAC-10 to RPB Industries, Inc. of Georgia in 1976. Many companies continued to produce parts and variants of the MAC-10 design – perhaps most notably the semi-automatic Cobra version – but the gun still did not see widespread use in the military and police.
However, the same design elements that made the MAC-10 theoretically suitable for law enforcement and special forces—stealth, high rate of fire, close-up capability—also made it attractive to other constituencies.
